Lithuanian presidency: EU does not support veto right in UN

BC, Vilnius, 29.09.2015.Print version
According to Lithuanian president's chief advisor on foreign affairs Renaldas Vaisbrodas, member-states of the European Union are rather unanimous about reforming the United Nations (UN) organisation and abolishing the veto right in the UN Security Council, informs LETA/ELTA.

Last year, Russia made use of its veto right and prevented the establishment of an international tribunal to investigate the downing of the Malaysia Airline's plane and also did not support the resolution to condemn the Srebrenica massacre in 1995 as genocide.

"The practice of the recent years shows that one particular country, a member of the UN Security Council, is constantly vetoing those decisions that are related to international justice and investigation of those crimes," the presidential advisor said.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite will touch upon the necessity to reform the UN during her speech at the General Assembly on Tuesday night.
