Latvian ministry proposes new Administrative Territorial Reform Concept with two reform options

BC, Riga, 28.09.2015.Print version
The Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry in Latvia has forwarded to the coalition partners a new Administrative Territorial Reform Concept that offers two reform options, as the ministry's press service informed LETA.

The Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry plans on implementing the reform in 2021, when municipal elections will take place in Latvia.

One of the options foresees an administrative division model where Latvia would have 49 regions and nine cities.

Several criteria were taken into account during the work on this model – development centers should have a population of at least 1,000, developed network of roads, and proper infrastructure. Among the other criteria – at least one high school in the region, and the average distance between populated places and the region's administrative center of around 30 kilometers.

The second option foresees establishment of 29 cooperation territories around development centers of national and regional importance.
