Approximately 1,000 prisoners are on strike in Lithuania

The Prison Department under the Ministry of Justice in Lithuania has reviewed the number of prisoners who refuse to eat food provided by penal facilities. The figure by Tuesday evening stood at 1,028 or 14% of all inmates in Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

A total of 7,100 people are serving prison sentences in Lithuania.

News agency ELTA earlier learned from Advisor to the Prison Department, Karolina Froloviene, that 100 inmates of Vilnius Correction House and approximately 260 inmates of Alytus Correction House have refused food. Nonetheless they do cook food from products purchased in shops.

As reported, by refusing to accept food, prisoners oppose the newly introduced rules. Some of the rules prohibit children from being present during long-term meetings, inmates isolated in cells for poor behaviour are not allowed to keep tobacco products. Prisoners are also dissatisfied by the restriction on footwear and apparel items, and the limit of cash to be spent in prison shops.

The Prison Department is unaware about possible wider commotion in penal institutions and says the changes are not aimed at exacerbating conditions in penal institutions.
