Print versionA non-citizen from Latvia has been detained in Hungary for smuggling illegal refugees, Foreign Ministry spokesman Raimonds Jansons confirmed to LETA.

He explained that Hungarian authorities are investigating the people-smuggling incident, and it is not yet known from where the persons he was smuggling came from. ''The Hungarians continue their investigation into the incident, but it is clear this man has been taken into custody,'' Jansons said.
Asked whether this man has requested assistance from the Latvian Embassy on Consular Department, Jansons said that, according to Hungarian authorities, he has not.
Hungary is currently one of the transit countries from where illegal refugees attempt to travel to more prosperous European countries.
