At the cabinet meeting on August 27th, the Government members in Estonia were given an overview of the current state of preparations for the European Union presidency, reports LETA, referring to the Government Press Office.

The current focus is on finding people with necessary skills and experiences, and preparing them for the presidency period.

“If we will be successful during the presidency period, it will help create an image of Estonia as a reliable, capable and co-operative small country, leading the co-operation between EU Member States in the course of six months,” said Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas.

The future presidency team will be of nearly 1,300 persons, and mapping people with necessary competences in Estonia's State authorities has already began. All members of the presidency team will ahead of the presidency period also participate in the training programme financed by the European Social Fund and the Ministry of Finance.

Estonia will start work for the first time as the European Council presidency in 857 days, and preparations are co-ordinated by the State Chancellery European Union Secretariat in partnership with all ministries and many Government authorities.
