Vejonis: it is still unclear how refugees will be integrated in Latvia

While Latvia has precise procedures for the assessment of asylum seekers' applications, there is no set procedure for the integration of refugees, President Raimonds Vejonis said in an interview with Latvian State Television this morning, cites LETA.

A task force has been set up that will until the end of November draw up proposals regarding Latvian language training, housing, employment, and other aspects of refugee integration, said the president.

The government's decision that Latvia will accommodate 250 refugees is not disproportionate, stressed Vejonis. However, this is the first time Latvia has to take in and integrate such a large number of refugees.

Vejonis also said he was not sure whether Latvia would not have to take in more refugees in the future. "It would be quite difficult to say that 250 will be it," said Vejonis, adding that the number of asylum seekers had been rising quickly in southern Europe. Taking in 250 refugees could be a temporary solution for the next two years, he said.

Vejonis also stressed that the international community should work on procedures and mechanisms to stop the refugee flow across Europe.
