Lithuania's SocMin: wages of social sector employees to grow in 2016

BC, Vilnius, 18.08.2015.Print version
Lithuanian Social Security and Labour Minister Algimanta Pabedinskiene says wages of the lowest earning social sector employees will grow in 2016. The Ministry of Social Security and Labour has proposed to the Government to maintain the same basic wage level of EUR 130.5, reports LETA/ELTA.

The matter of the basic wage will be considered at the Government on Wednesday. The basic wage is used when calculating wages of politicians, judges, public officials and officers. According to the minister of social security and labour, the basic wage will not be changed because next year the Ministry intends to devote its attention to the lowest earning workers of budgetary institutions, while additional appropriations to social sector employees have already been agreed upon with the Ministry of Finance.

"We have calculated that wages of social workers could grow by EUR 70 on average and this would annually require approximately EUR 6.5 million," Pabedinskiene said.

According to Finance Minister Rimantas Sadzius, as a new recast of the Statute of the Internal Service enters into effect on 1 January 2016, wages of the lowest earning statutory officers will be raised as well. Amendments to the Law on Public Service will be considered in Parliament too, they will amend procedures how public servants' remuneration is calculated.

"This would allow to somewhat increase the lowest salaries and make remuneration system more transparent and fair," said the finance minister.
