Border Guard chief: punishments for human smuggling in Latvia too lenient

BC, Riga, 05.08.2015.Print version
Taking into account that human smugglers are to be blamed for the growing number of immigrants in Latvia, the punishments for people smuggling in Latvia are too lenient, the State Border Guard Chief Normunds Garbars said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning, reports LETA.

Under Latvian laws, penalties are assessed and applied according to the circumstances of a case, however, according to Garbars, these punishments are inadequate, as in Latvia courts sentence human smugglers to community service.

"We must consider that the human smuggling business has been growing fast, and the number of people wish to get involved is increasing. Likewise, the number of illegal immigrants is and will be growing," said Garbars.

As reported, the Border Guard detained 22 illegal immigrants and four human smugglers on August 1. A large number of border guards, five police dogs and Border Guard aviation participated in the operation that took place near the Border Guard's offices in Berzini.

Eventually the Border Guard detained 22 Vietnamese citizens and four smugglers – two from Latvia and two from Russia.

Overall, 239 illegal immigrants have been detained in Latvia so far this year. 165 of them are citizens of Vietnam.

In 2014, the Border Guard detained 200 illegal immigrants and 19 smugglers.
