Latvian Border Guard detain 22 illegal immigrants and four smugglers

A large number of border guards, five police dogs and Border Guard aviation participated in the operation that took place near the Border Guard's offices in Berzini.
Eventually the Border Guard detained 22 Vietnamese citizens and four smugglers – two from Latvia and two from Russia.
A criminal case has been opened.
At the end of July 2015, the Administrative Court turned down a complaint lodged by four citizens of Vietnam after the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs decided not to grant them the refugee's status or an alternative status. In their petition, the Vietnamese citizens indicated that they had been persecuted in Vietnam due to their religious or political beliefs.
The court's verdict cannot be appealed.
Overall, 239 illegal immigrants have been detained in Latvia so far this year. 165 of them are citizens of Vietnam.
In 2014, the Border Guard detained 200 illegal immigrants and 19 smugglers.
