Bergmanis approved as Latvia's new defense minister

Latvian Saeima today confirmed MP Raimonds Bergmanis (Greens/Farmers) as Latvia's new defense minister, reports LETA.

50 MPs supported Bergmanis' candidacy, five voted against, while seven abstained.

 

The Union of Greens and Farmers put forward Bergmanis for the post after previous Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis became president.

 

Bergmanis intends to relinquish his MP mandate.

 

According to LETA archives, Bergmanis was born in 1966 and has an engineering-chemists degree from Riga Technical University, as well as a degree from the Latvian Sports and Pedagogy Academy.

 

Bergmanis is a three-time Olympic weightlifter, competing at the 1992 Barcelona Games, 1996 Atlanta Games, and the 2000 Sydney Games.

 

Bergmanis is also member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's Security and Defense Commission, and is a military recruiting expert, having worked many years at the Youth Guard Recruiting Center. He is also Vice-President of the Latvian Olympic Committee and President of the Latvian Olympians Club.

 

Bergmanis was voted into the 12th Saeima from the Greens/Farmers ticket and is currently a member of the Saeima's Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee.
