Police will monitor bikers ride via Vao refugee centre village

BC, Tallinn, 03.07.2015.Print version
The Estonian motobikers community is organising a ride that could involve over a thousand people, which they say is in support of the village residents of Vao, the location of Estonia's only refugee centre; the North East Estonian Rakvere police station head Indrek Link said that the organisers of the Saturday's motorcycle ride have contacted the police and a public meeting notice has been submitted; LETA/Delfi reports.

"The notice has not yet been registered, since it lacked some of the required information," Link said.

This is also the first report about coordinating the Saturday event with the authorities. Link said that the police now knows the motorcyclists' main routes of movement and the course of events is monitored in the Vao village, as well as roads leading there. "How many people will participate in the parade, it is difficult to predict, but the police emphasizes that even people who join the joint ride on the go, must comply with the requirements imposed by the organizers of the meeting. Also, all the participants must follow the traffic rules and the general requirements for being in a public place," said Link.

According to law, a public meeting organizer is required to designate event stewards, who observe a demonstration and stop it, if there is a risk to public order, including the meeting "inciting hatred, violence or discrimination on grounds of nationality, race, colour, sex, language, origin, religion, sexual orientation, political beliefs or economic or social status or the purpose of which is committing those crimes or incitement to them."

"The organizers have confirmed that they understand their own responsibility for the peaceful conduct of the event," said Indrek Link.

Currently, 1,022 motorcyclists have registered at the event's Facebook page, along with 222 people in the drag racing community street.ee.

Organisers of the event say that what they plan is a non-political and non-racist peaceful joint drive to express support to the village residents of Vao who have recently complained about problems they face because of the Vao refugee centre. The villagers recently made a public statement where they expressed opposition to expanding the centre which currently houses about 80 people while initially it was meant for 35. They said that the overpopulation causes tensions in the small community, especially since the refugees lack language skills or knowledge of local culture or customs and demanded that the state cooperate more with the local government and residents in the refugee centre matters.
