President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended the ceremony of unfurling the symbolic flags of Lithuania and Georgia to mark Georgia’s Independence Day. Welcoming the participants of the ceremony at the Cathedral Square in Vilnius, the President underlined that Lithuania strongly supported the people of Georgia in building a European state, reports BC presidential press service.

“You are our brothers and sisters in the Caucasus. Lithuania understands and values Georgia’s fight for independence. We know very well what it means to lose freedom and territory. We understand what it means for Georgia to become a European state, therefore we support you,” the President said.

The Lithuanian head of state noted that Lithuania supported Georgia’s aspiration for membership in the EU and NATO. The Lithuanian tricolor which today encircled a Georgian flag is a token of Lithuania’s support to Georgia and unity between our nations.

A symbolic flag of Georgia encircled by a 200-meter-long Lithuanian tricolor displayed at the Cathedral Square was made by Lithuanian school students and members of youth organizations. It was a unique initiative to commemorate the 97th anniversary of Georgia’s independence.
