Lithuania's Seimas backs proposal to hold dual citizenship referendum

BC, Vilnius, 05.05.2015.Print version
Lithuania's parliament has backed an idea to hold a referendum on dual citizenship, as proposed by the Liberal Movement. The party's group had proposed to organize an obligatory referendum on dual citizenship on 9 October 2016, the same day as the next general election in Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

The motion on Tuesday was supported by 58 MPs, 9 MPs were against with 30 abstentions. The Seimas committees and the Constitutional Commission of the Seimas will still have to consider the draft law.

It is planned to return the draft law to the Seimas plenary sittings only in the Seimas spring session of 2016.

"It is great that the Seimas made the first step towards the referendum. In point of fact, Lithuania's population has been declining in an unstoppable manner. We find ourselves in the global 21st century world where borders no longer exist; therefore, we must be more flexible about dual citizenship. We cannot punish people just for the fact they left the country after the restoration of its independence in 1990, looking for better pay and life abroad," MP Eligijus Masiulius, leader of the Liberal Movement, said.
