If no additional funds are allocated by the government, a large number of investigators will leave the Interior Ministry and the ministry's institutions, as Prosecutor General Eriks Kalnmeiers said in an interview with Latvian State Television this morning, reports LETA.

Additional EUR 61 million is necessary for wage reform at the Interior Ministry, and if the funding is not provided, a large number of experienced investigators will quit, trade unions have told Kalnmeiers.

At the moment, there are about 700 investigators in Latvia, whereas the number of criminal cases to be investigated is approximately 48,500.

In Kalnmeiers' opinion, young investigators who have just graduated are not prepared to work on these cases for EUR 600 to EUR 700 a month before tax.
