Large-scale riot at Daugagriva Prison took place in Latvia

BC, Riga, 27.04.2015.Print version
Inmates from a total of 12 jail cells staged a riot last week at Daugavgriva Prison in Latvian Daugavpils, but no one was hurt, reports LETA.

Protesting their newly renovated quarters, violence erupted Friday night as the inmates took to smashing windows, light fixtures and furnishings. They are especially dissatisfied with the windows – which can no longer be opened; thereby shutting down a potential avenue for delivery of messages, items and substances.

To stifle widespread rioting, a meeting was called late Friday between staff and the inmates to discuss the grievances, and this helped ease the situation.

Police report that the riot involved about 40 men, but it is still unclear who the leader was. A list of damages and costs thereof is being drawn up.
