Chancellor of the Lithuanian Government Alminas Maciulis met in France with Angel Gurria, Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The meeting addressed the OECD Council's invitation to Lithuania to begin OECD accession process, reports LETA/ELTA.

The chancellor said that membership in the OECD is the Government's priority and emphasised Lithuania's readiness for the accession process.

"The OECD's decision to invite Lithuania to begin formal accession talks is a result of consistent and responsible work of Lithuanian institutions in reforming the country's economic management model, striving to correspond to the highest international standards," said Maciulis.

The chancellor stressed that Lithuania's and OECD's Action Plan is being successfully implemented and the country is ready to contribute OECD's goals.

Maciulis said the Government and institutions under it are preparing to review the areas of state-owned enterprises, innovation policies, economic assessment, youth employment and market transparency. He hoped that Lithuania's achievements would be welcomed.

Lithuania submitted formal OECD membership application in 2002. It is hoped that the formal invitation to begin accession talks will be approved on 3-4 June at the OECD Ministerial Conference in Paris. Currently 34 countries hold OECD membership.
