Security Department: Russia's consul general in Klaipeda was spying

BC, Vilnius, 30.03.2015.Print version
In its annual threat assessment for the year 2014, Lithuania's State Security Department (VSD) stated that Vladimir Malygin, Russia's former consul general in Klaipeda, was sent out from Lithuania in April 2014 because he was a Russian spy, informs LETA/ELTA.

The document says that Malygin liaised with heads of local government, representatives of organisations of Russia's compatriots, and leaderships of strategic companies.

"Malygin set his sights on non-public information of positions of political during the presidential election in Lithuania, potential changes in the ruling coalition following the presidential election, the progress and prospects of the project of liquefied natural gas terminal," the VSD's report says.

Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius says that the case of the Russian consul general who was sent out from Lithuania for his intelligence activities is not exceptional at all because spying under diplomatic cover is a rather common practice both in Lithuania and the entire world.

"We are aware of such cases and of course we assess them and adjust our relations accordingly," the minister said on Monday.

As reported in early April 2014, Minister of Foreign Affairs Linkevicius back then said that he had no information regarding the reasons for the recall of Russia's Consul General in Klaipeda Vladimir Malygin; however, he said that it was a common practice.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius back then refrained from commenting on the recall of the Russian consul in Klaipeda.

Consul General of the Russian Federation Malygin, who had worked in Klaipeda for several years, was recalled to Moscow in late April last year.
