Ex-mayor of Vilnius to seek president's seat in 2019

Outgoing Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas from the Lithuanian Freedom Union (Liberals) (LLS) says that his defeat in Vilnius mayoral election will only push him to go to national politics. Zuokas says that we will compete for the president's post in 2019, reports LETA/ELTA.

Commenting on his setback, the LLS head said that during the run-off mayoral election residents of Vilnius voted rather against him than in favour of Liberal Remigijus Simasius.

"Those residents of Vilnius who voted against Zuokas have returned me back to national politics," Zuokas said.

The outgoing mayor of Vilnius said that he will not only seek the Lithuanian president's seat in 2019 but will also try to secure an MP's mandate at the Seimas in 2016. According to him, national politics currently lacks more different approaches and discussions.

"There is too much dominance of one and the same opinion, proposal and suggestion," Zuokas said.

He also said that he would never again run for the Vilnius mayor's seat because the LLS needs changes.
