Government of Latvia approves amendments to Repatriation Law

BC, Riga, 04.03.2015.Print version
The government accepted several new amendments to the Repatriation Law on March 3rd, 2015 with the objective to facilitate the return home of Latvian citizens and persons of Latvian ethnicity and Liiv ethnicity, as well as their relatives, to a permanent life in Latvia, reports LETA.

The draft bill was drawn up in accordance with the Re-emigration Support Plan for 2013-2016. The plan stipulates an increase in the number of persons who are eligible for the status of a repatriate.

The new draft bill has an updated definition of what constitutes a repatriate. The old definition said that the status of a repatriate could be applied only to persons with either one parent or grandparent, Latvian or Liiv ethnicity The new definition excludes this restriction in order to encourage young people to repatriate themselves.

Other amendments stipulate that the repatriate's children are also eligible to receive the status if younger than 21. The repatriate's spouse is also eligible to receive the status on the condition if the marriage has been established before the submission of the repatriation claim.

The new bill also stipulates state-funded language courses for repatriates.

Saeima is yet to decide on the said draft bill.
