BC, Vilnius, 02.03.2015.Print version
Based on the preliminary data of the Central Electoral Commission (VRK), with all 151 Vilnius polling districts having sent in votes regarding mayoral elections, a second round of elections will be held between Remigijus Simasius and Arturas Zuokas, informs LETA/ELTA.

Remigijus Simasius of the Liberals' Movement has won the first round with 34.53% of votes. Meanwhile Arturas Zuokas, current Mayor and Chairman of the Lithuanian Liberty Union (liberals), was second with 18.36% of votes.

Zuokas swooped in at the last moments to take the second place from Valdemar Tomasevski. The leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and the Russian Alliance Block of Valdemar Tomasevski finished third with 17.25% of votes.

Mykolas Majauskas of the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) was fourth with 8.86% of votes.

Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has not yet revealed whether it would join the conservative and liberal coalition in Vilnius. The leader of the LSDP Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius agrees that "it is easier to implement ideas working in the ruling coalition".

The Social Democrats will discuss election results and further strategy on Wednesday. The party will decide then if it is going to support any of the two candidates competing for Vilnius mayor's seat – Remigijus Simasius or Arturas Zuokas.

Butkevicius did not exclude the possibility that the LSDP might join the coalition in Vilnius City Municipal Council. According to him, this will be discussed on Wednesday as well.
