Extradition process for Latvian Calovskis to U.S. has started

BC, Riga, 12.02.2015.Print version
The extradition process for Latvian cyber-crimes suspect Deniss Calovskis to the United States has started, State Police spokesman Toms Sadovskis confirmed to LETA.

Calovskis will be handed over to the U.S. Marshall Service.

State Police spokesman Toms Sadovskis did not comment to LETA whether Calovskis is already on his way to the United States to face trial, but repeated that his extradition process is already underway.

Meanwhile, Calovskis' attorney Ilona Bulgakova told LETA that her client was taken into custody by police on February 9, and she believes that Calovskis is already on his way to the United States.

As reported, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has decided against reviewing its initial ruling regarding extradition to the United States for Calovskis, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry.

The decision was made by the ECHR on December 15.

The ECHR ruled this past July that Calovskis cannot be extradited to the United States yet, and indicated to the Latvian government not to expel Calovskis until the judgment became final or until the Court took a further decision on this matter, which has finally been made.

Calovskis' legal team later appealed the ECHR ruling.

This means that the final hurdle for Calovskis' extradition to the U.S. has been lifted.

LETA also reported, the government decided in August of 2013 to extradite Calovskis to the United States, however his attorneys turned to the ECHR, claiming that the extradition be put on hold until Calovskis' case is reviewed by court, and the ECHR halted the extradition process.

U.S. law enforcement institutions have brought charges against three alleged East European cyber thieves accused of stealing banking information from computers across Europe and the United States, including Calovskis.
