BC, Vilnius, 05.01.2015.Print version
In consistency with the Constitution and the decree of Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite, Lithuanian parliament has ratified the intergovernmental agreement between Lithuania and Georgia on cooperation in the fight against crime, signed on 26 September 2013 in Vilnius, reports LETA/ELTA.

A total of 81 MPs voted in favour of the law with no votes against and no abstentions, the press service of the Seimas said.

The agreement will create the preconditions for addressing the problems of bilateral cooperation in the fight against crime and will contribute to building public safety in Lithuania and Georgia.

The agreement identifies the scope and forms of cooperation in detecting and preventing crime. It provides for a personal data protection mechanism that meets the requirements of international law. The agreement also stipulates that the storage and processing of the classified information received by the parties will be governed by the intergovernmental agreement between Lithuania and Georgia on the exchange of classified information and its mutual protection signed in 2009, as well as the law applicable on the territories of the contracting parties.

The ratification of the agreement will have a positive impact on the fight against crime because of improved communication and cooperation between the competent authorities and officials in detecting and preventing offences.
