Food Union hopes to begin exports to China in March

The milk processing and dairy company Food Union from Latvia hopes to begin exporting its products to China in March 2015, the company's board chairman Normunds Stanevics told members of the press today, cites LETA.

He said that representatives from the Chinese Audit Commission will arrive at the company's production facility in Latvia to carry out inspections, and that the company could receive all the necessary permits and certificates to begin exporting to China within two months.

Stanevics said that the company's ''Rasa'', ''Lasens'', ''Limbazu piens'', ''Lapzemes siers'', ''Ekselence'', ''Pols'', ''NU Fruit'' and ''NU Smoothie'' products will be exported to China.

''We will ship our ice cream products by ship, which will take about 45 days to get to the final destination. Actually, sending a container of ice cream to Shanghai costs about the same as sending one truck of ice cream to Moscow,'' Stanevics said.

He said that milk could also be potentially exported to China, as the price of one liter of milk in the Chinese market is around UDD 5. Since ''Rasa'' is a high-quality product, one liter of ''Rasa'' milk in the Chinese market could cost around USD 6 per liter, and this would mean shipping milk to China by air would pay off.

''Milk is being shipped to China by air from the Netherlands every day,'' Stanevics added.

He said that China is the second largest importer of dairy products in the world, and that the country has a huge deficit of milk, as its imports 11 million tons annually.

Food Union was the only company from Latvia who participated in one of the world's largest food exhibition in Beijing this past November – ''World of Food Beijing 2014''.

As reported, Food Union is a joint company owned by Rigas piena kombinats and Valmieras piens.

The company currently employs over 800 persons, and turnover exceeds EUR 100 million per year.
