BC, Riga, 26.11.2014.Print version
The government of Latvia decided yesterday to allot EUR 9.9 million to consolidation of scientific centers and facilitating their excellence, informs LETA.

The funding is needed to reform the sector and help development of 15 scientific centers and centers of excellence that have acquired the highest recognition.

With the allotted funds, these institutions will draw up their own development strategies, including research programs, institutional development plans, and human resources development plans. Cooperation between scientific institutions, universities, and employers will improve. The funding will be also used in order to reorganize or liquidate individual scientific institutions.

The Education and Science Ministry stresses that the funding is meant to better prepare scientific institutions for the new planning period of the European Union's funds. It is said that a total of 15 scientific centers will submit projects for the funding.

The total amount of funding is EUR 9,911,645, of which EUR 2,500,000 will be used to improve scientific excellence, and EUR 7,411,645 – to support the consolidation of scientific institutions.

It is possible that another EUR 1 million will become available for science after December 12.
