Fast food chain McDonald’s is planning to invest around EUR 6 million in Latvia in the next three years (2015-2017), McDonald’s development license holder in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Greece and Malta, Melo Hili and McDonald’s Central Division President Khamzat Khasbulatov said in an interview with LETA.

Overall, McDonald’s is planning to invest EUR 15 in all three Baltic countries during the next three years.

The company plans to open three new restaurants in Latvia in the next three years, as well as introduce new technologies and solutions that would make food ordering much easier for the customers, said Hili.

"Next year in the Baltic States, starting with Latvia, the company will start to introduce self-service food ordering and payment kiosks. These devices visually will look like ATMs, but unlike ATMs, these kiosks will have two screens – one on each side. Kiosks will be located inside the McDonald’s restaurants, so the customers will be able to make an order without waiting in line, as well as pay for it," said Hili.

Customers will benefit not only from the fact that they will be able to choose whether to stand in line or not, but also because their food will be prepared at once when the payment is confirmed.

Currently it is unknown how many of these devices will be introduced in McDonald’s restaurants in Latvia next year, said Hili.

The aim is not to reduce costs, for example, by staff cuts. This service aims to improve customer shopping experience, making McDonald’s food more accessible than ever before, stressed Khasbulatov.

McDonald’s has more than 34,000 restaurants in 119 countries.

According to information provided by "Firmas.lv", Premier Restaurants Latvia – the company that runs McDonald’s restaurants in Latvia – turned over EUR 29.63 million in 2013, which is 23 percent more than in 2012, when the company turned over EUR 24.19 million. The company's profit increased by 18 percent, reaching EUR 632,729.

McDonald’s began operating in Latvia in 1994 when it opened its first restaurant in the Old Town of Riga. At the moment, there are eleven McDonald’s restaurants in Latvia – ten in Riga and one in Jelgava.
