With the National Culture Council looking at 26 nominees for the inaugural presentation of the Award of Distinction, three were singled out for the honor in Latvia, informs LETA.

Alexander Antonenko.

Opera tenor with international stature, the "homegrown" Alexander Antonenko, was selected, as was the talented movie director Janis Nords ("Mother, I Love You"), and an entity – the Zanis Lipke Memorial Museum – a striking tribute to a man who provided safe haven for many Jews during the Holocaust.

As Minister of Culture Dace Melbarde (VL-TB/LNNK) commented: "I am pleased that we can applaud our outstanding artists for their achievements internationally with this special award."

The Award of Distinction's presentation ceremony will be held on December 22 in the Academy of Culture's Theater Arts Center "Zirgu pasts" in midtown Riga.
