Latvia registers largest ever increase in tourist number in 2014

Print versionDespite a reduction in the number of Russian tourists, Latvia still was able to register its largest ever increase in tourist number this year, Economy Ministry State Secretary Martins Lazdovskis said during the ''Latvian Tourism Forum 2014'' today, cites LETA.

In the first half of this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting Latvia increased by 20%, but in the nine months of this year – by 15%.
As Lazdovskis pointed out, the average number of days foreign tourists spend in the country increased from 2.1 days to 2.4 days.
Due to the events in Ukraine, the number of Russian tourists visiting Latvia has reduced by about 15% this year. However, there was a 60% increase in tourists from Great Britain, 30% increase in tourists from Germany, and a 64% increase in tourists from Japan.
Overall, Lazdovskis said that culinary and shopping tourism to Latvia is becoming more popular.
