Latvian fish cannery Piejura, which operates from the coastal village of Nica, has begun to re-direct its exports from Russia to European and the United States in wake of the Russian food embargo, the company's spokesman Maris Daude informed LETA.

He said that the company previously exported 97% of its total export volumes to Russia, but now it exports only about 50% of its export volume to Russia.

At the same time, he said that the company plans on producing 60 new products next year, which will be orientated towards western markets, and that the company hopes to reduce export volumes to Russia to about 30% of its total export volume.

''We came to the conclusion already at the beginning of this year that we must work on preventing risks related to our large proportion of exports to Russia. We have been very determined in our work at re-directing exports, and have since found new cooperation partners in Europe, the United States, Canada and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States,'' Daude said.

Piejura achieved EUR 3.69 million in turnover last year, and operated with EUR 106,349 in profit, according to ''Firmas.lv''.

The company was established in 1993 and currently produces a wide range of canned fish products. The company also employs 207 persons at the moment.
