Amount of cargo transported in Lithuania by rail, sea grows in 10 months

In ten months of 2014, the amount of cargo transported by rail and sea transport has slightly increased in Lithuania, writes LETA/ELTA.

According to the data of Statistics Lithuania, 40.7 million tonnes of cargo were carried by rail in January-October 2014, or by 2.1% more year-on-year. National carriage accounted for 12 million tonnes or by 7.1% less, whereas international for 28.7 million tonnes or 6.4% more.

 

In January-October 2014, cargo handling in Klaipeda State Seaport and Butinge Terminal stood at 36 million tonnes, and increased by 1.1% compared with January-October 2013.


Klaipeda State Seaport handled 30.1 million tonnes of cargo, i.e. by 7.3% more, while Butinge terminal – 5.9 million tonnes, i.e. by 21.6% less year-on-year.

 

Bulk cargo constituted 39.7% or 14.3 million tonnes of all cargo, liquid cargo – 33.7% or 12.1 million tonnes, general cargo – 26.6% or 9.6 million tonnes.

 

In January-October 2014 year-on-year, bulk cargo increased by 25.5%, general cargo by 7.3%. However, handling of liquid cargo fell by 20.6%, the decrease was due to 21.9% reduction in petroleum and petroleum products' handling, which accounted for 88.7% of the total liquid cargo.

 

In January-October 2014, Klaipeda State Seaport handled 371,600 containers (TEU), 213,500 road vehicles and 280 freight wagons. Compared with the relevant period of 2013, container handling increased by 10.3%, however road vehicle handling fell by 3.2% and freight wagons by 85.2%.

 

Based on preliminary data, in October 2014 compared with October 2013, Klaipeda State Seaport and Butinge terminal handled by 20.9% more cargo.
