Number of tourists in Estonian hotels grew by 4% in September y-o-y

According to Statistics Estonia, 233,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in September 2014, which was 4% more than in September of the previous year. The number of both foreign and domestic tourists increased.

In September, 156,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 2% more than in September of the previous year. 57% of the foreign tourists arrived from the neighbouring countries Finland, Russia and Latvia. Compared to September 2013, 3% more tourists from Finland stayed in accommodation establishments, while the number of tourists from Russia and Latvia decreased by 10% and 3%, respectively. Also, there was an increase in the number of accommodated tourists from Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway and Lithuania. The number of tourists arriving from Sweden and Poland decreased. The number of tourists arriving from Asian countries continues to increase. In September, there were 30% more tourists from Asian countries staying in accommodation establishments than in the same month a year ago.

 

About three-quarters of the foreign tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments stayed in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. The next most popular destinations were the cities of Pärnu and Tartu, accounting for 7% and 5% of all accommodated foreign tourists, respectively. More than two-thirds of the foreign tourists were on a holiday trip and a quarter was on a business trip.

 

In September, 77,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 10% more than in September of the previous year. 33% of the accommodated domestic tourists stayed in Harju county, 12% in Pärnu county and 11% in Tartu county. 57% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 31% were on a business trip.


In September, 1,094 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. Nearly 200 accommodation establishments closed its doors at the end of the summer high season. 20,000 rooms and 47,000 beds or, respectively, 10% and 13% fewer rooms and beds were available for tourists than in August. In September, the room occupancy rate was 43% and the bed occupancy rate was 32%. The room occupancy rate was higher in the cities of Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu. The average cost of a guest night was 36 euros, which is three euros more expensive than in September 2013. The average cost of a guest night in Tallinn was higher than the country’s average.
