The Nordic countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland) invested a total of EUR 17.28 billion in the Baltics in 2013, the director of export services company GatewayBaltic Inese Andersone said during the Nordic-Baltic Business Forum yesterday, cites LETA.

Compared to, for example, 2003 when Nordic investments in the Baltic region totaled about EUR 6.71 billion, the investment amount last year substantially increased.

The biggest investor in the Baltic region last year was Sweden, which invested over EUR 9 billion.

Andersone also said that the proportion of Nordic investments in Latvia has increased over the past ten years.

''If in 2003, Latvia only got about 14 % of Nordic investments in the Baltic region, last year this proportion increased to 22 %. Nordic investments in Lithuania reached 29 % last year, but in Estonia – 49 %,'' Andersone explained.

Nordic investors in the Baltics usually investment in the financial and insurance sectors, as well as in manufacturing, logistics, trade and communications. ''There are over 2,000 companies operating in the Baltics which Nordic investors have either established or invested in, and these companies employ about 110,000 persons at the moment,'' Andersone added.
