Estonian milk producers launch their own brand to counter Russian embargo

BC, Tallinn, 15.10.2014.Print version
Due to the difficult situation that emerged in Estonian dairy industry due to Russia's import embargo, Estonian milk producers call Estonians to drink more milk and launched on Wednesday a new brand "Estonian Milk", LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Estonia milk producers' association EPIKO council chairman Mart Riisenberg said that the producers want to make people aware that every buyer can contribute to the Estonian milk production surviving and better coping with the consequences of the embargo.

"Every buyer has a significant impact. If consumption grows within Estonia, the disappearance of export will not hit our farmers so hard, and they can increase their volumes at the local market," said Riisenberg.

Riisenberg said that if every Estonian drank at least one glass of milk a day more, it would mean that out of Estonia's daily milk production, an additional 10% or around 200 tonnes would be consumed at the domestic market. This is comparable to the quantity of milk products exported to Russia before.

Riisenberg estimates that the just price paid to farmers for raw milk would be 30 cents a kilogram; it would help them survive difficult times and maintain production. Currently, the price is just 18-26 cents per kilogram.

EPIKO trademark "Estonian Milk" is in shops initially for three months.
