In his meeting on Wednesday with the United States Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas Vilsack, the Prime Minister of Lithuania was delivered good news about the final audit report on equivalence drafted by the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), confirming Lithuania’s compliance with the requirements of the United States and its equivalence to the US’s control system, informed BC governmental press service.

The Prime Minister was also informed about further necessary procedures to be taken by the US Administration to include Lithuania in the Federal Register of countries authorized to provide meat products for the US market. The procedures will include drafting of a relevant regulation by the US Administration, which will entail a public debate on the draft regulation (90-day period). Following the public debate, the regulation goes through legislative procedure of approval to become effective.

The Lithuanian Government thanked the United States Secretary of Agriculture for the good news and the efforts taken to make this possible.

“Lithuania is highly interested in developing trade relations with the US, particularly as regards meat products. The fact that the US institutions has recognized Lithuanian meat control system as equivalent to that of the US has political and economic significance, especially in the context of the current geopolitical situation,” said the Prime Minister and added that Lithuanian meat and dairy sectors have been markedly dented by Russia’s food product embargo. Therefore, closer trade relations with the US would be more than welcome, as we pursue to diversify export markets, develop stable and reliable partnerships, and focus on stable markets.

Among other items discussed was the progress in negotiations between the EU and the US on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which is expected to bear mutual benefit.

“Lithuania supports the wide-scale negotiations between the European Union and the United States of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership that aim at developing trade relations on both sides of the Atlantic. We are interested in strengthening our trade and economic relations with the US,” said Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius in his meeting with the US Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas Vilsack.
