Latvian MFA signs agreement on air traffic with UAE

On the sidelines of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers signed the Latvia-UAE Air Services Agreement. The ministers agreed that its signing is an important step for future cooperation. Rinkevics said that the framework of bilateral agreements should be further expanded, thereby strengthening commercial and economic relations. Attention was directed at proposed agreements on the facilitation and protection of investments, and on bilateral economic cooperation.

 

The ministers also exchanged views on Latvian-UAE cooperation during Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU. Rinkevics said that during Latvia’s presidency of the Council of the EU, close attention will be given to EU relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council.

 

Also on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Rinkevics met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Marty Natalegawa. The Indonesian foreign minister said that he appreciated the contribution which Minister Rinkevics has made in advancement of Latvian-Indonesian bilateral relations. The ministers were pleased by the increasing bilateral trade and supported the further strengthening of economic relations. Rinkevics and the Indonesian Foreign Minister also discussed opportunities for cooperation during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU and spoke about preparations for the ASEM Ministers of Education Meeting to be held in Riga in April 2014.

 

During the UN General Assembly, the Latvian foreign minister took part in a high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of Beijing +20. This meeting took place with the objective of supporting the work of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) with an eye to the review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration. Rinkevics emphasized that gender equality was one of Latvia’s main priorities in the area of human rights, and that these matters will be highlighted during Latvia’s EU Presidency.

 

Rinkevics deposited the instruments of ratification for the Kampala Amendments of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court relating to the crime of aggression as well as a number of war crimes in non-international armed conflicts.
