EU-Canada trade reach a peak value for exports of EUR 31.6 bln in 2013

After a significant decrease in 2009, the value of European Union trade in goods with Canada recovered in the following years to reach a peak value for exports of EUR 31.6 billion in 2013. Imports also recovered to a peak value of EUR 30.7 billion in 2011, and then fell to EUR 30.3 billion in 2012 and EUR 27.3 billion in 2013., informs LETA/ELTA.

As a result, the European Union trade surplus of EUR 4.3 billion with Canada in 2013 is the highest recorded since 2006. In 2013, Canada was the European Union's twelfth most important trading partner, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union informs.

 

In the first six months of 2014 Lithuania's export to Canada stood at EUR 43 million, the exact same amount as in the first half of 2013. Imports amounted to EUR 11 million, compared to EUR 5 million in the first half of 2013. In the first half of 2014, Lithuania's surplus in trade was EUR 32 million.

 

Among the European Union Member States, Germany (EUR 4.4 billion or 28% of EU exports of goods) was the largest exporter to Canada during the first six months of 2014, followed by the United Kingdom (EUR 2.2 billion or 14%), Italy and France (both EUR 1.5 billion or 9%) and the Netherlands1 (EUR 1.4 billion or 9%). The United Kingdom (EUR 4.5 billion or 36% of EU imports of goods) was by far the largest importer from Canada in January-June 2014, followed by Belgium (EUR 1.4 billion or 11%), Germany, France and Italy (all around EUR 1.3 billion or 10%).

 

Most Member States recorded a surplus in trade with Canada over the first six months of 2014. Germany (+EUR 3.1 billion) continued to have the largest surplus, followed by Poland (+EUR 0.5 billion), the Netherlands (+EUR 0.4 billion) and Austria (+EUR 0.3 billion). The largest deficits were observed in the United Kingdom (-EUR 2.3 billion) and Belgium (-EUR 0.5 billion).

 

European Union trade in goods with Canada is dominated by manufactured goods, which accounted for 79% of exports and for 45% of imports in January-June 2014.
