Despite the changeable weather this year, this season's grain harvest could reach 1.916 million tons, which is 11% more than the average harvest for the past five years, the Agriculture Ministry's spokeswoman Rigonda Krievina informed the business portal Nozare.lv, reports LETA.

According to the Rural Support Service data, a total of 644,000 hectares have been sown with grain this year, which is 10% or 60,000 hectares more than in 2013.

This is one of the main reasons why, even with the lower than expected harvest of winter crops, harvest this year is expected to be higher than usual and only 2% lower than last year.

As reported, 70% of winter crops in Latvia was destroyed or badly damaged due to very little snow this past winter.

During the past five years, the average amount of winter crop yield for wheat was 3.2 tons from one hectare, rye – 2.8 tons, triticale – 2.6 tons, barley – 2.4 tons.

Meanwhile, the average amount of summer crop yield for wheat was 3.3 tons from hectare, barley – 2.8 tons, oats – 2.2 tons.
