Chairman of the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, , Mecislovas Zasciurinskas said at a press conference in the Seimas on Wednesday that the Ministry of Agriculture is ready to send its delegation to Iran to discuss cooperation in the food sector.

"This would be a perfect market, today we can mostly talk about two products – grain and milk powder," said the MP.

If during the autumn session the Seimas manages to legalise ritual slaughter (of farmed animals – ELTA), then "this direction would be major and crucial".

The Lithuanian Parliament delegation headed by Deputy Speaker Algirdas Sysas conducted a working visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran on 9-12 August.

Lithuanian MPs hope that the first visit of the Seimas delegation will play a positive role in developing bilateral cooperation between the countries.

Lithuania established diplomatic relations with the Persian Empire in 1930, when the treaty of bilateral friendship was signed. The treaty was validated by Iran in 1991.
