Large increase in logistics sector turnover registered in Latvia in Q1

Cargo turnover at Latvian ports grew by 9.4% while the volume of cargo transported by rail increased by 7.6% in the first quarter of 2014, informed BC the Latvian Institute.

Latvian ports saw a turnover increase by 20.78 million tons in January-March 2014, almost 10% more than in the same period in 2013. Meanwhile cargo transported by rail totalled 17.04 million tons – both are important sectors in Latvia’s GDP.

 

In January-March 2013, Latvian ports handled 18.96 million tons of cargo.

 

The Freeport of Riga handled 9.9 million tons of cargo in January-February 2014, 21.7% more than in the respective period in 2013. The Freeport of Ventspils handled 8.99 million tons, a 1.5% decrease, the Port of Liepaja – 1.5 million tons, a 4.8% increase.

 

The volume of transit freight transported through Latvian ports increased 13.9% to 14.02 million tons.

 

The total volume of transit freight has increased by 10.9% to 14.54 million tons.
