The first tests of the pilot plant will be carried out with Estonian oil shale but in the near future, tests with Utah and Jordan oil shale also starts.

"Launching the pilot plant is a very important milestone for development projects," said Eesti Energia manager Sandor Liive. "We have produced oil in a smaller test device out of the Jordan and Utah oil shale already but the bigger the device, the more true to life the result of the test," he said, adding that the data received enables to evaluate what kind of developments the technology needs to adapt it to different types of oil shale.

"The pilot plant also increases considerably our ability to offer the Enefit-technology to clients across the world," he said.

Planning the pilot plant started in 2010. The pilot plant uses up to 300 kg of oil shale an hour to produce oil shale oil.
