In January-April, cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports grew by 3.9%

In PRIMORSK PORT 23 252,8 thou. tn of oil and oil products, i.e. less by -11,6% or by 3 050,3 thou. tn than in January – April of 2012 were handled. Primorsk Port handles exclusively oil and oil products. Throughout the analysed period 20 286,0 thou. tn of crude oil (-16,4% or -3 970,1 thou. tn yoy) and 2 966,8 thou. tn of oil products (+44,9% or +919,8 thou. tn yoy) were handled in the Port.
In the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG totally 17 370,2 thou. tn of cargo were handled; the change was -2,0% or less by -351,7 thou. tn than during the corresponding period of 2012. Containerised cargoes constitute 44,0% of the total cargo handling (7 638,6 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was -1,4% or -107,2 thou. tn). Oil products constitute 18,5% ( 3 219,7 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was +2,2% or +70,5 thou. tn), metal constitutes 12,3% (2 143,7 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was -14,6% or -365,5 thou. tn) and fertilizers constitute 8,7% (1 508,0 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was +10,9% or +148,1 thou. tn), of the total cargo handling volumes. Reefer cargoes marked the increase by 13,7% or by 86,0 thou. tn to 712,3 thou. tn that were handled in January - April of 2013.
UST-LUGA PORT totally handled 18 569,0 thou. tn of cargo; the year-on-year change was +69,1% or +7 590,0 thou. tn. Such a rapid growth in cargo handling turnover was determined by the increased handling rates of cargoes that cut out the largest share of the overall turnover of this Port: crude oil (7 396,1 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was +6,2 times or +6 195,5 thou. tn), the coal handling increased by +14,1% or by +638,6 thou. tn to 5 158,0 thou. tn, oil products ( 4 293,5 thou. tn were handled; the yoy change was +8,6% or +341,5 thou. tn), 441,0 thou. tn of Ro – Ro cargoes were handled, the yoy change was +30,6% or +103,2 thou. tn, metal – 269,3 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -39,2% or -173,5 thou tn.
The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 5 033,7 thou. tn; the year-on-year change was +22,7% or +932,7 thou. tn. This port handles mainly two categories of cargo. Oil products constitute the largest share in the overall turnover of the Port, i.e., 71,0% Throughout the analysed period 3 571,9 thou. tn of oil products were handled, i.e. the handling rates increased by +8,8% or by +290,0 thou. tn year-on-year. Volumes of coal handling were 1 461,8 thou. tn; the change was +78,5% or +642,7 thou. tn year-on-year.

The total throughput of Klaipėda Port and in Būtingės terminal within the period of January- April of 2013 totalled 15,3 mln. tn of seaborne cargo, the change of cargo handling turnover was +10,1% if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012. The cargo handling turnover in Klaipėda Port within the analysed period reached 12,1 mln. tn, the year-on-year change was +8,1% or +0,9 mln. tn, meanwhile 3,2 mln. tn of cargo were handled at Butingės terminal, the year-on-year change being +18,1% or +0,5 mln. tn.
Comparing with the corresponding period of 2012 the most significant growth of cargo handling volumes in January – April of 2013 was reached due to increased handling rates of dry and bulk cargoes (the growth reached 21,3% comparing with the corresponding period of 2012) including agriculture products (+681,5 thou. tn yoy), raw sugar (bulk) (+148,3 thou. tn yoy), natural and chemical fertilizers (+132,1 thou. tn yoy) and raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+122,7 thou. tn yoy).
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargo marked the total increase in Klaipeda Seaport and at Butingės Terminal by 11,9% yoy to 7 140,9 thou. tn. The significant growth of handling rates of cargoes attributed to this cargo group has been recorded: crude oil (+18,1% or +490,1 thou. tn yoy), natural and chemical fertilizers (liquid) (+29,3 % or +134,4 thou. tn yoy), oil products (+3,2% or +100,0 thou. tn yoy), and raw sugar (molasses) (+11,3% or +4,4 thou. tn yoy).
The drop of general cargo handling volumes by 4,2% in Klaipeda Seaport has started from the very beginning of the year. In total 3 410,9 thou. tn were handled in January – April of 2013 ( 22,3% of overall Port handling turnover). In the group of general cargoes only the handling rates of frozen products (89,0 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +7,2% or +6,0 thou. tn) and Ro-Ro cargoes calculating in units ( 81 163 units were handled, the yoy change was +0,5% or +377 units ) marked the increase, meanwhile the significant decrease of handling turnover was recorded in the cargo handling rates of the remaining cargo types attributed to this group of cargoes: -0,3% of Ro-Ro cargoes calculating in terms of tonnage (1 526,2 thou. tn were handled, the change was -0,3% or -4,4 thou. tn yoy), -31,0% of natural and chemical fertilizers (packed), -11,7% of timber and forest products, -31,8% of iron , steel products and metal constructions, -1,4% of containerised cargoes (in terms of tonnage) if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012. The handling turnover of containerised cargoes in terms of TEU increased in January - April of 2013 and reached 129 839 TEU (+7,4% or +8 988 TEU yoy).
2 114 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – April of 2013. 32 vessels (+18,5% or more by 5 vessels yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. Klaipėda Seaport received 2 082 vessels (less by 4,9% yoy) including:
- 1 466 international vessels (less by 133 vessels or by 8,3% year-on-year)
- 616 domestic ships ( more by 25 ships or by 4,2% yoy).
The number of passengers within the analysed period was 75 500, i.e. less by 7,2% or by 5 816 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.
The total throughput in the PORT of TALLINN in January – April of the current year was 10 260,0 thou. tn; the change was -7,9% or -874,2 thou. tn year-on-year. Oil products (7 424,4 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was -2,3% or -173,0 thou. tn), Ro-Ro cargoes (1 169,0 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was -8,8% or -113,2 thou. tn), containerized cargoes (594,4 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was +2,1% or +12,0 thou. tn) and fertilizers (569,7 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was -22,1% or -161,5 thou. tn) constitute the basic share of overall cargo flow in the Port of Tallinn.
Passenger traffic. This year the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 2 372,4 thou. passengers; the change was +2,0% year-on-year, or +45,8 thou. passengers.
Vessels. 2 226 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. less by 42 vessels or by 1,9% comparing with the corresponding period of 2012. The Port rendered services to 686 cargo ships ( the yoy change was -4,5% or less by 32 ships) and to 1 540 passenger ships; the yoy change was -0,6% or less by 10 ships.
The aggregate throughput of RIGA PORT totalled 11 106,9 thou. tn; the change was -11,3% year– on - year or -1 412,2 thou. tn. In January-April of 2013 coal and oil products constituted the largest share in the overall handling volumes in this Port (37,7% and 25,1% respectively).
The reduced flow of the following cargo in terms of categories made the greatest impact on the cargo handling turnover in the Port of Riga: coal ( decreased by -16,9% or by -850,3 thou. tn yoy to 4 129,7 thou. tn), oil products (decreased by -12,3% or by -391,5 thou. tn yoy to 2 792,4 thou. tn).
In January – April of 2013 the handling rates of fertilizers (+33,5% or +125,9 thou. tn yoy to 501,2 thou. tn), containers (+3,6% or +44,1 thou. tn yoy to 1 278,9 thou. tn) marked the increase.
Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 207 685 passengers; the year-on-year change was -0,2% or -495 passengers. The number of cruise passengers was 5 054; the yoy change was +5,5% or +263 passengers.
The cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS increased by +0,7% or by +79,0 thou. tn. year-on-year which altogether totalled 11 923,0 thou. tn. The dominating cargo categories in the Seaport of Ventspils were as follows: oil products that amounted to 6 390,0 thou. tn in January – April of 2013 the year-on-year change dropping down to -1,2% or -80,0 thou. tn. and coal that amounted to 3 315,0 thou. tn with year –on year change +1,6% or +51,0 thou. tn.
The highest increase was recorded in iron ore handling turnover – 485,0 thou. tn were handled, the year-on-year change was +122,5% or +267,0 thou. tn. In January- April of 2013 the handling rates of fertilizers dropped rather significantly (436,0 thou. tn were handled; the yoy change was -160,0 thou. tn or -26,8%).
Passenger traffic. 16 049 was the number of passengers calling the Port of Ventspils in January-April of 2013; the year-on-year change was -888 passengers or -5,2%
Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 621 vessel; the year-on-year change was +0,2 pct, or +1 vessel.
The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA reached 1 741,1 thou. tn; the year-on-year change was -23,1% or -522,1 thou. tn. Grain handling cut out the largest share of handling volumes of this port. In January – April of 2013 the Port handled 559,9 thou. tn of grain; the year-on-year change was -39,5% or -365,8 thou. tn. The handling of scrap metal also marked a considerable slow down – 55,9 thou. tn were handled; the change was -74,5% or -163,2 thou. tn. The highest increase of handling turnover was recorded in metal handling volumes (241,2 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was +47,6 thou. tn or +24,6%).
Passenger traffic. The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 7 140; the year-on-year change was +43.3% or +2 159 passengers.
Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 467 vessels, i.e. less by 126 vessels or by 21,2% if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.
