In Q1, the number of tourists accommodated in Lithuania grew by 5.6%

According to the provisional data of Statistics Lithuania, in I quarter 2013, accommodation establishments accommodated by 5.6% more guests than in the same quarter of 2012, and received 344.9 thousand tourists.

The number of tourists from the EU countries totalled 78.2 thousand (by 6.5% less than in the same quarter of 2012), from non-EU countries – 102.4 thousand (by 18.8% more). The number of Lithuania's residents accommodated grew by 4.7% and totalled 164.3 thousand.

 

The majority of foreign tourists were from Russia – 51.5 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 44.1 thousand), Belarus – 30.4 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 21.7 thousand), Poland – 16 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 16.2 thousand), Latvia – 14.2 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 12.9 thousand), Germany – 11.6 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 11.1 thousand), Estonia – 5.9 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 6.7 thousand), the United  Kingdom – 6.5 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 5.9 thousand), and Norway – 5 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 4.1 thousand). The major part of foreign tourists – 59.4% – stayed in Vilnius.

 

Almost a third of tourists (28%) stayed in the accommodation establishments of resort towns: Druskininkai – 62.6 thousand (by 0.7% more than in I quarter 2012), Palanga – 24.6 thousand (by 18% more), Birštonas – 7.3 thousand (by 10.3% more), Neringa – 2.1 thousand (by 24.1% more).

In I quarter 2013, the number of tourists accommodated in hotels and motels amounted to 294.5 thousand.

 

In I quarter 2013, compared to same quarter of 2012, Lithuanian hotels and motels accommodated by 5.1% more tourists; the number of foreign tourists accommodated increased by 3.9%. The number of rooms in hotels and motels totalled 13 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 12.5 thousand), that of beds – 26.6 thousand (in I quarter 2012, 25.7 thousand). The hotel and motel room occupancy rate stood at 34.8% (in I quarter 2012, 34.4%), the bed occupancy rate – 26.2% (in I quarter 2012, 25.9%).

 

In I quarter 2013, Vilnius hotels and motels accommodated 130.4 thousand tourists, which is by 3.3% more than in the same quarter of 2012; the number of foreign tourists amounted to 100.9 thousand, or by 3.3% more. In I quarter 2013, the room occupancy rate of Vilnius hotels and motels stood at 45.1% (in I quarter 2012, 44.5%), the bed occupancy rate – 33% (in I quarter 2012, 32.7%).

Concepts

Accommodation establishment refers to a local kind-of-activity unit providing paid short-stay accommodation services and facilities to satisfy overnight accommodation and hygienic needs.

 

Number of tourists accommodated includes Lithuanian residents and foreign visitors with at least one overnight stay in an accommodation establishment.
