Latvia is the leader in the development of a "new silk route", which could be put to use after the conclusion of the mission in Afghanistan, United States General William Fraser III, Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, said in an interview with LETA, lauding Latvia's contribution to the Northern Distribution Network.

The U.S. Defense Logistics Agency transported 13,620 tons of cargo via Latvia to Afghanistan from April 2012 to April 2013. Latvia and the U.S. continued this cooperation to deliver a part of the equipment back to the U.S. Since June 2012, when the U.S. began transporting its equipment back from Afghanistan, 6,356 tons have been brought back, pointed out Fraser.

The U.S. expects the turning point in June, when the 100,000th container will be transported via Riga. "When looking at these figures, you can see that we are doing very much together, which is highly appreciated," added Fraser.

In the future, this process will be used to promote economic development and trade. Many countries are currently working together to realize how to do exports and imports. There are considerable investments in infrastructure, for example – in railroads and roads, pointed out the general.
