Most liquid-crystal display plants are located in Asia and, even though the principles of liquid-crystal displays were invented in the United States, Japan was the first one to introduce liquid-crystal displays. Therefore liquid-crystal display manufacturing is more developed in Japan and other Asian countries. Philips and IBM have had successful researches and manufacturing in Europe, however, trends indicate that manufacturing follows the largest markets. Undoubtedly, Asia is very large in terms of population and it makes sense to manufacture cell phones there. Nevertheless, there are several unoccupied niches in Europe, therefore building the plant in Ventspils makes perfect sense, explained Ozols.

EuroLCDs will launch manufacturing in a month's time.
