Wednesday, Lithuania's Cabinet has approved the construction of a new bridge over the Nemunas (Neman) River, linking Panemune town in Lithuania and Sovetsk, a town in Kaliningrad region, Russia.

The Government of Lithuania and the Russian Federation signed an agreement on the Panemune-Sovetsk bridge construction on October 4, 2011. The document now has to be ratified by the Lithuanian Parliament, writes LETA/ELTA.

The bridge over the Nemunas River is planned to be built next to the existing Queen Louise Bridge of Russia. It is expected that the new bridge would increase the transport capacity between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region, improve the connection between the residents of the two countries and promote more active business relations.

Lithuania has asked for the European Union funds for the project. The EU support may reach LTL 34.5 million (EUR 10 million). A road leading to the projected bridge is already built on the Russian side.
