Riga Airport serviced 7,519 tons of cargo in April; 657% increase year-on-year
Print version
On average, the airport previously handled 1,000 tons of cargo per month. The amount of cargo mainly increased due to two U.S. airlines Kalitta Air and National Air Cargo launching cargo transportation from Riga, writes LETA.
These operations are significant for the airport, as they contribute to the development of cargo servicing. "Considering the significance of fast cargo servicing and delivery, the Riga International Airport has created 11 new jobs for this purpose. The airport is not the only one to benefit from the development of cargo transportation, Latvia's economy benefits as well, entire economy of Latvia as well," pointed out the airport's CEO Arnis Luhse.
As reported, regular air freight transportation to Afghanistan was launched in April. Two to three flights (with around 100 tons of cargo each) are performed each day, considerably increasing the airport's cargo volumes.
It is planned that these flights will continue in the coming months and could be used to transport cargo also from Afghanistan.
Cargo transit via Latvia to Afghanistan was launched in February 2009. Since then, at least 40,000 TEU containers have been transported.
