In 2011 the volume of freights carried by all types of transport increased in Latvia

In the 4th quarter of 2011, 16.2 million tons of freights were carried by rail, and it is an increase of 32.4%, as compared to the 4th quarter of 2011. In comparison with the year before, the total volume of freights carried by rail in 2011 has increased by 20.8% and reached 59.4 million tons.

In the 4th quarter of 2011 13.5 million tons of freights were carried by road, and it is 7.5% more than in the 4th quarter of 2010. As compared to the previous year, the total volume of freights carried by road in 2011 has grown by 13.4% and reached 53.1 million tons.

In the 4th quarter of 2011 50.3% (6.8 mln tons) of the total volume of freight carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 15.6% (2.1 mln t) – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, and 7.7% (1 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products, printed matter and recorded media.
The freights carried by road are transported both – on own account and for hire or reward. In 2011 35.4 million tons of the freight were carried for hire or reward, an increase of 15.1%, if compared to the year before. The volume of freights transported on own account has risen by 10%.
In the 4th quarter of 2011 1.1 million tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline – 19.3% less than in the 4th quarter of 2010. The volume of transported oil products (5.8 million tons) in 2011 rose by 3.7%, as compared to 2010.
Passenger transportation by public transport in the 4th quarter of 2011 and in 2011 as a whole has diminshed slightly:by 2.5% and 1.5% respectively, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In the 4th quarter of 2011 4.8 million passengers were carried by rail, a decrease of 0.4% in comparison with the 4th quarter of 2010. The number of passengers carried by national transport has reduced by 0.3%, whereas by international transport (mainly between Latvia and Russia) has grown by 1.9%. In comparison with the year before, the total number of passengers carried by rail in 2011 has decreased by 1.7%.
In the 4th quarter of 2011 the number of passengers carried by the regular bus traffic comprised 30 million passengers – a decrease of 3.5%, as compared to October – December of the year before. The majority (99.7%) of these passengers were carried by national bus traffic. The number of passengers carried by national transport has decreased by 3.4%, whereas the number of passengers carried by international transport – by 12.4%. In 2011 the total number of passengers carried by regular bus traffic has diminshed by 4.4%, if compared to the year before.
In the 4th quarter of 2011 23.1 million passengers were carried by urban electrified transport – a decrease of 1.7%, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus has dropped by 0.7% and thre number of passengers carried by trams – by 2.8%. In 2011 87.8 million passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, and it is an increase of 2.8%, as compared to 2010.
