Autoliv considering moving production facilities from Germany to Estonia

Autoliv, the Swedish-origin producer of cars’ safety equipment announced that it will close down two Norma plants in Germany, writes LETA/Postimees Online.

The enterprise is considering moving the production facilities to Estonia.

Hamburger Abendblatt wrote that the cause for closing of the plants and moving is the desire to cut costs. In Germany a working hour costs 12 euros while in Estonia the cost is three euros.

Peep Siimon, the head of Norma Estonia, confirmed the plans to close down production of components in Germany where metal components are produced for safety equipment.

Norma is producing similar details and in principle is using a similar technology. Whether any production operations can be brought to Norma and if so, how much, will depend on our competitiveness in a longer-term perspective and the decision will be made by the managing board of Autoliv,” he added.

Siimon did not want to speculate, how many new employees would Norma Estonia have to hire or how much to invest into production equipment.
