PrintLatvia records fastest rise in electric car sales among EU member states

During the first three quarters of this year, the number of electric vehicles registered in Latvia increased by 328 percent against the respective period a year ago, which is the fastest increase among European Union (EU) member states, according to information released by RIA.com Marketplace.

Altogether, 287 new electric vehicles were registered in Latvia in the first nine months of 2020. Of these vehicles, 229 were battery electric vehicles and 58 were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.


By comparison, the number of electric automobiles registered in Latvia in the first three quarters of last year was 67. 


With the 328% increase in January-September, Latvia has set a regional electric car registration record, beating Slovakia, which reported a 316.5% increase, the Czech Republic with a 245.5% rise and Estonia where electric car registrations grew by 208.5%. 


In Estonia, the number of new electric cars registered in January-September grew to 253 this year from 82 vehicles a year ago, resulting in a 208% increase. In Lithuania, electric car registration grew 173% on year, with 328 vehicles registered in January-September 2020 as compared to 120 vehicles a year ago.
