German-owned Lidl Lithuania is planning to build an 8,000-square-meter extension to its logistics center near Kaunas, and Maxima, another major Lithuanian retail chain, is set to invest in a temperature warehouse, according the business daily Verslo Zinios information LETA/BNS writes.

Andrius Narmontas, the head of logistics at Lidl Lietuva, says the existing 41,900-square-meter logistics center in Ramuciai is too small to meet the chain's needs.

The company has not received a building permit yet, but design proposals have already been worked out. Construction is planned to begin in the first half of 2021 and be completed by 2022. The number of employees at the logistics center will remain unchanged after the expansion, according to the documents.

Maxima currently owns six warehouses, located in different parts of Vilnius, with a total area of over 100,000 square meters. It also uses partners' logistics centers in Vilnius and Kaunas.

The company says it is considering building a new temperature warehouse to optimize its existing warehousing space and simplifying its logistics to stores.

Rimi Lietuva says it has no immediate plans to expand or alter its logistics center.

Rivona, a logistics company serving the needs of Norfa stores, says automated systems installed in its warehouse have increased labor efficiency.
