Tallinn Airport's passenger numbers grew by 11.5% in August

In August 2020, 84,387 passengers passed through Tallinn Airport, which is approximately 26% of the volume of passengers in August last year; however, the number of passengers grew 11.5% compared to July 2020, reports LETA/BNS.

This is the highest number of passengers per month since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the airport said.

"The beginning of August showed a positive trend both in terms of the number of passengers and the number of open routes, but in the second half of the month, some signs of a decrease in the number of passengers began to appear. This was due to an increase in the number of infections in several European countries and the implementation of flight restrictions, which, in turn, had a negative impact on the number of air passengers," Eero Pargmae, chief commercial officer of the state-owned airport company, said in a press release.

Pargmae added that while at the beginning of the month, it was possible to fly on 20 regular routes, then in the last week of August, there were direct connections with 14 cities.

"The increase in coronavirus infections in Europe has once again created a great deal of uncertainty in aviation," he said. Pargmae added that the fact that different countries take very different measures to combat the virus, which must be followed on an ongoing basis, adds to the complexity for travelers.

"At the same time, Tallinn Airport is pleased that the government has taken preventive steps to avoid a complete disruption of air connections. The continued operation of the Frankfurt, Riga, Helsinki, Warsaw, Copenhagen and London routes will definitely help to maintain the necessary business links and will be a positive step towards economic recovery," he said.

A total of 2,183 flights took place in August, an average of 70 landings and take-offs a day. Most flights were made to major hubs, which are Helsinki, Riga and Frankfurt. The average load factor on scheduled flights was 56 percent.

Tallinn Airport urges all passengers to familiarize themselves with the restrictions and requirements of the destination country before going on a trip. Information can be found on both the Reisi Targalt (Travel Smart) and Re-open EU websites.

From September 1, Estonian residents will be able to have a coronavirus test taken at the airport when arriving from a country with a high coronavirus level. On the first day, 375 tests were performed at the airport. The airport asks passengers to be understanding and to keep a distance from each other if it is necessary to wait in line a little in order to give a sample.
